Perhaps the most dramatic rugs from Morocco are these brilliantly colored flatweaves from the Ouad Zemm region in the south. These striking rugs usually have a solid color as the backdrop for a large variety of animal and plant images, protective symbols and an overall design pattern. These flatweaves are made of thick wool and the designs are woven out of wool or silk. You will see from the detail photo below representations of camels and birds as well as diamonds and interlocking X's which are characteristic of Berber rugs (look for the images of cars in the photo in the lower left below). You will see in the detail photo images of camels, horse and sheep - animals which figure in the daily life of the nomadic Berbers; the triangle motif is said to represent the nomad's tent.
