While it is the Tuareg men who
veil their faces, Tuareg women wear a veil which covers their entire bodies. It
is usually made of a indigo or black gauzy material which is light in the
heat of the desert but keeps the sand out. One end of the veil goes over
the head and is thrown over the shoulder; a decorative veil weight is tied
to the end of the veil and it keeps the veil in place even in high winds.
These weights are usually made of iron, copper brass and silver; their
design is very elaborate including etching on the metal and layers of wood
and metal sandwiched together.
