KhomissarThe khomissar is worn by Tuareg women. It is a variation of the Hand of Fatima (or khamsa, from the Arabic word for five, as in the five fingers of a hand) made up of five joined diamond shapes. The khomissar protects the wearer from the evil eye and ensures fertility. They are passed down from mother to daughter. TcherotTalisman boxes are called "tcherot" by the Tuareg and contain written verses of the Koran to protect the wearer. TanfoukThese carnelian (also quartz and agate) beads are called "tanfouk" by the Tuareg. Their shape is a common fertility symbol and the carnelian wards off evil and alleviates menstrual cramps in women. Tuareg Veil Weights (assrou n' swoul)While it is the Tuareg men who veil their faces, Tuareg women wear a veil which covers their entire bodies. It is usually made of a indigo or black gauzy material which is light in the heat of the desert but keeps the sand out. One end of the veil goes over the head and is thrown over the shoulder; a decorative veil weight is tied to the end of the veil and it keeps the veil in place even in high winds. These weights are usually made of iron, copper brass and silver and their design is very elaborate including etching on the metal and layers of wood and metal sandwiched together.LEFT:
