Khomissar Pendants

The khomissar, worn by Tuareg women, is a variation of the Hand of Fatima (or khamsa, from the Arabic word for five, as in the five fingers of a hand) made up of five joined diamond shapes. The khomissar protects the wearer from the evil eye and ensures fertility. They are passed down from mother to daughter. They are made of leather and shell, as seen in the example on the far left, or leather and metal, as seen in the pieces on the right.

Khomissar Pendant

The khomissar is worn by Tuareg women. It is a variation of the Hand of Fatima (or khamsa, from the Arabic word for five, as in the five fingers of a hand) made up of five joined diamond shapes. Tanfouk Pendants

These carnelian (also quartz and agate) beads are called tanfouk by the Tuareg. Their shape is a common fertility symbol and the carnelian wards off evil and alleviates menstrual cramps in women. They are worn woven into the elaborately braided hairdos of Tuareg women.
