To help give you an idea of the neighborhood and its proximity to where you want to go I have listed a location for each hotel. Most of these areas are very safe (hotels usually don't open in dangerous areas) but each neighborhood has its own character. The following is a list of these locations: Downtown: includes Soho, Tribeca, East and West Village, Noho, Chinatown and most areas below 14th Street but not including Wall Street; in general the most hip and eclectic area of NYC though it is being overrun with Gap, Pottery Barn, Banana Republic stores and fast food restaurants; great shopping for both haute couture and vintage stores along with everything in between; most clubs and cafes are in this area; Soho, once an area of artists lofts, galleries and funky shops is gradually being taken over: lofts were bought out by Wall Street moguls and dotcommers, galleries and funky shops replaced by chain stores, and this implantation is almost complete Upper West Side: west of Central Park above 59th Street; said to be the "new-money" neighborhood of NYC; includes the campuses of Columbia and Barnard so it has the feel of a college town; lots of restaurants and shopping; access to Central Park and Riverside Park as well as the Museum of Natural History Upper East Side: east of Central Park above 59th Street; said to be the "old-money" area of NYC; lots of high-end stores especially along Madison Avenue; home of Museum Mile which includes the Metropolitan Museum and the Guggenheim Midtown: east and west between 34th Street and 59th Street; the business district of Manhattan; this area is very quiet on weekends; home of the New York Public Library, Grand Central Station and the United Nations Chelsea: west side between 14th Street and 34th Street; an up-and-coming area hosting former Soho galleries squeezed about their old digs; lots of funky shops and restaurants Gramercy Park: east side between 14th Street and 23rd Street; a very quiet residential area centered around a lovely park Wall Street/Financial
District: below Chinatown and Tribeca down to the tip of Manhattan;
in normal times this area is very busy and vibrant during the day and
like a ghost town at night; these days (post-Sept. 11th) the pattern
of the day is the same but the atmosphere is different; the areas around
the World Trade Center are closed off while crews clean up the area;
the situation should be much improved by March 2002 |
